Why do I read?
Well, there are many reasons as to why.
Number one:
I love the escape.
Number two:
I love sharpening my imagination.
Number three:
I love learning.
I could go on and on..but that may bore some of you (including myself).
On average, I try to read at least a book a month. With school and other daily life it’s a pretty good goal. Over winter break on the other hand I have been pretty lucky and overindulged. I’ve read 3 books. Right now I am in the middle of Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach. I read it when it first came out in 2003, but found it on my book shelf and decided to let it breathe a little bit.

So far, I still love it as much as I did then. Gaining insight on human cadavers with a sometimes comical twist. Some might say, “Why are you reading about human cadavers? That’s NAASYT!” Well, I find it interesting, though it isn’t something I most likely would want to do for a job, it’s interesting enough to read in a book. I mean, I spent ringing in the New Year’s reading this book. So that has to mean something, right?
After reading so many books in my lifetime and being able to polish off a 500 page book in a day with no problems makes me wonder why reading is so important to a society and to individuals. So, with my trusty love of documentaries I found just the right show to explain why reading is important. I found it fascinating, and you can’t go wrong with the BBC.
Accents, gotta love ‘em!
So, with further ado…
another reason why I read (and yes, it is ironic that it is a video on reading
).

I’ll have to look at the video’s when i have more time, but have you ever read marshal McLuhan’s book ‘The medium is the massage’? He has an interesting take on how Gutenberg and reading changed the way we think and react to the world around us. Left to right, top to bottom. Babies now need to be taught that pattern … anyway it’s an interesting read, And if you like McLuhan, there is also Media and Communications. I read for all the same reasons, usually have 2 or 3 books going at once.
I will have to check out those books. Thanks for sharing them!
Great video too. The fact is we are responsible for our own evolution, in a way that Darwin never imagined (actually he did but his published work is skewed by proponents of the survival of the fittest. Thinking affects our DNA. We become what we think about. or the Hermetic axiom – ‘As above so below’ Whether it’s heaven and earth, or brain and body, mind and feeling … Hmmm. Good concept for a future blog – Thanks!
I thought so too! Glad I could help inspire for a future post! You are very welcome.
Stiff is a book that I want to read too. Hope I can find it on Amazon.
It’s a great book. Here is a link on Amazon for ya! http://www.amazon.com/Stiff-Curious-Lives-Human-Cadavers/dp/0393050939
